Invenia ABUS Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS)

Invenia ABUS is an innovative breast cancer screening for women with dense breast tissue

What is Invenia ABUS Automated Breast Ultrasound System?

The InveniaTM ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound System) is a comfortable, non-ionizing ultrasonography alternative screening option for women with dense breast tissue.

Why is Invenia ABUS screening needed?

Approximately 70%-80% Malaysian women have dense breast. Dense breast can increase a woman's risk to develop cancer by 4-6 times. Mammography may miss 33% of cancers in dense breast. Invenia ABUS has been proven to find 55 % more invasive cancers after a normal or benign mammographic* finding alone.

"I have dense breast tissue" - what does that mean?

Breasts are made out of fat and breast tissue. Some women have more fat than breast tissue while others have more breast tissue than fat. When there is more breast tissue, the mammogram looks more white and is considered dense. Since masses or lumps also appear white on a mammogram, a lump may be masked by the dense breast tissue. Dense breast tissue is also linked with an increase in the risk of developing breast cancer.

That being said, having dense breast tissue is NOT an abnormal condition. It is a part of you, like having green eyes or red hair and not something that you can readily change. Dense breast tissue is common and 70% of women have dense breast tissue. Since mammography has limited visibility in women with dense breast tissue, screening dense breasts with ultrasound, in addition to mammography, may improve the likelihood of detecting cancer.

What are the steps in an Invenia ABUS exam?

The Invenia ABUS acquisition process uses 3D ultrasound technology to comfortably and quickly image women with dense breast tissue. Each exam takes approximately 15 minutes.

The Reverse CurveTM transducer used in the examination is shaped according to a woman's anatomy. It enhances both patient comfort and breast coverage during the exam. The 15 cm widefield-of-view high-frequency transducer automatically creates uniform compression across the entire breast for consistent, reproducible image quality independent of the operator. The convergent scan line geometry minimise beam refraction.

Clinical value

The Invenia ABUS is FDA-approved system for screening women with dense breast tissue based on a multi-center, prospective clinical study with over 15000 subjects. It can be used for both diagnostic and screening purpose. In the study, the majority of thecancers detected were small, invasive, node-negative that were missed by mammography. Invenia ABUS reduces operator variability and creates 3D ultrasound effect to enable comprehensive analysis and comparison to multi-modality exams.
Clinical studies confirmed the accurate, cost-effective and non-invasive staging of breast cancers prior to surgery due to the global view of the breast.

Anatomy of an ABUS image

ABUS 3D images provide clinicians the ability to thoroughly and efficiently examine breast tissue. Multi slice of the coronal plane allows physician to have a better clarity on the suspicious findings.

How does Invenia ABUS benefit the patient?

Non-invasive, non-ionizing radiation, real-time and economical nature
Help to reduce the need for invasive tests
Provide an alternative to exams with X-ray or CT that expose patients to radiation
Proven to increase cancer detection by 55% in women with dense breasts and no prior breast interventions
Examination time is short and comfortable
